Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia won’t run for reelection in 2024, the reasonable Democrat introduced on social media Thursday.

“I can’t be operating for reelection to the US Senate however what I can be doing is touring the nation and talking out to see if there’s an curiosity in making a motion to mobilize the center and convey People collectively,” Manchin stated in a message posted on social media.

The Democratic Caucus controls the chamber with a slender 51-49 margin, and Manchin’s resolution to not run once more in such a deeply pink state places Democrats in a troublesome spot, as they’ll be defending seats in different aggressive states.

Montana Sen. Steve Daines, who chairs the Nationwide Republican Senatorial Committee, launched a press release minutes after Manchin’s announcement, saying, “We like our odds in West Virginia.”

It’s unclear what particularly Manchin will do after leaving Capitol Hill. Earlier this 12 months, he stoked hypothesis of a third-party presidential marketing campaign, when he spoke at a No Labels discussion board at St. Anselm Faculty in New Hampshire.
